The Michigan Tech Standathon is an annual twelve-hour standing marathon designed to raise money for Bay Cliff Health Camp. Bay Cliff is a year-round, not-for-profit therapy and wellness center for children and adults with disabilities. Bay Cliff offers several camps that focus on increasing independence and recreational activities for those with disabilities.

This year’s Standathon will take place Friday, March 23 to Saturday, March 24 from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. in the Student Development Complex. Students who participate in Standathon are welcome to arrive or leave the event as they wish.

Entrance to Standathon is $10 at the door. Students who pay a $15 entrance fee get a free t-shirt and those who pay a $20 entrance fee get a free t-shirt and are put in the running for the grand prize: a Kindle Fire. Some students also collect pledge donations for the event.

Last year, Standathon raised $6,500 in donations! This year, their goal is $7,000.

Activities

In years past, Standathon was held in the Memorial Union Building or in the Wadsworth Dining Hall. Over the years, the number and variety of activities offered—and number of students participating—have grown. Last year, Standathon took place in the Student Development Complex to provide more space for activities and to be able to provide more diverse activities—such as broomball and swimming.

The new location of Standathon was a hit for the past two years and the Student Development Complex was again chosen as the venue for this year’s event. This year, there are more than thirty activities planned for students to participate in.

With all of the bizarre activities and great prizes that are available to this year’s participants, students will be more than excited to stay on their feet for the whole time! Students who have previously participated in Standathon have found that the event provides a great opportunity to spend time with friends, meet new people and have a blast—all while raising money for a local charity!

In the past, some of the many crazy and fun activities offered have included a sixty-five-foot-long inflatable obstacle course, sumo wrestling, black-light mini golf, eating contests, laser tag, video-game competitions, and life-sized board games.

In addition to all the fun activities, last year, there were also several prizes and giveaways throughout the night. Several smaller prizes will be raffled off by the hour this year, along with a Kindle Fire.

To top it off, there is always lots of great food and snacks at Standathon. Students who stood all night get to enjoy a complimentary breakfast pizza breakfast in the morning.

Standathon Student Organization

Standathon is a Michigan Tech student organization that was established to provide students with the opportunity to participate in a once-a-year, large-scale community service event.

Student members of the Standathon organization spend the year planning for the twelve-hour event. The students coordinate everything from t-shirt designs to advertisements and donations of prizes and food. Members of Standathon have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other students, businesses, and community members to raise money for Bay Cliff Health Camp.

Standathon is certainly an impressive student run event! Thank you to all the volunteers and organization members who are working to make the sixth-annual Standathon a giant success!
