LeaderShape Institute®

October 31, 2011 in Community, Events

Past Events

This past week was full of sweet treats and fun times at Michigan Tech. From Safehouse BINGO and pumpkin carving to engineering caramel apples in the dining hall and a costume party dance, students had festive activities to participate in each evening. Saturday, October 30, was Michigan Tech’s annual Safehouse event; students decorated the residence halls for public tours by children and members of the local community.

The LeaderShape® Institute—an intensive leadership development experience designed to help students “lead with integrity”—is an incredible opportunity open to Michigan Tech undergraduates. For a week each winter, students have the chance to participate in interactive lectures, hands-on activities, and large and small group discussions. They learn how to be more effective leaders, find out what their leadership style is, and much more. Many students say their favorite part of the experience is getting to know Tech faculty and staff and making great new friends.

LeaderShape® has been a Michigan Tech tradition since 1995, and this year’s seventeenth annual institute will be held January 3–8, 2012, at Tech’s Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Alberta is approximately 40 miles south of Tech’s main campus. The Ford Center’s facilities include residential areas for the week’s stay, a conference room, a dining hall, and tons of trails to explore and enjoy during free time.

All students are encouraged to apply for LeaderShape®; each year, about 40–60 students are chosen to participate in the institute. There is a minimal cost for attending, but student organizations often sponsor student members who are chosen to go. All transportation, lodging, and meals are provided (students are expected to stay at the Ford Center for the duration of the Institute).

LeaderShape® is definitely the experience of a lifetime, and we hope you’ll encourage your student to apply! The application can be found at Applications are due by Friday, November 4, and selected participants will be notified within a couple weeks.
