The first week of classes are officially over at Michigan Tech! Last week’s activities of Welcome Week seemed to go over very well for all the students on campus. It was a great way for students to get back into the groove of things and become acquainted with each other again. Students were able to really enjoy their long weekend here, thanks to Labor Day, and seemed to take advantage of the beautiful outdoors by adventuring through the Keweenaw, having bonfires at the beach and camping despite the chilly weather!

Keweenaw Day

K-Day 2010 photo from Student Activities

Keweenaw Day will take place at McLain State Park this Friday and students will be released from class at 12:00 p.m. K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is one of Michigan Tech’s longstanding traditions that takes place every September and provides an opportunity for students to check out all the student organizations offered on campus, with many showcasing demonstrations or displays to really get the students interested in their organizations.

Last year at K-Day there was a lot of free food, great live music, and other fun activities. Many of the booths at K-Day will have prizes, give-a-ways and fun activities. These student organizations range from Greek organizations, services groups, club sports, academic organizations, and much more. Our University has over 220 student organizations, which provides an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

K-Day 2010 photo from Student Activities

Students have two options for getting out to McLain, they can take their own cars or take the free shuttle bus. The shuttles leave from the Memorial Union Building every half hour, beginning at 12:00 p.m. I would recommend if possible for students to take the free shuttle bus, it saves them the trouble of trying to find a place to park.

I would strongly encourage all students to take time to head out to K-Day and check out the organizations. Many of my greatest memories so far as a student have come from being a member of student organizations. I have met so many great people who have similar interests as I and have been given so many amazing opportunities in leadership development. For more information about the student organizations available at Michigan Tech, check out the Student Organization website.

IRHC Rideboard

Lately, I have seen many questions regarding Michigan Tech’s IRHC Rideboard . I thought I would give you a quick update on this website and how your students can utilize it. This website was designed for Michigan Tech students looking to carpool with other students to get to and from various locations. When you log into the website there are a few key options to use. You can choose to browse listings, search listings, or create your own listing. If your student is looking to find a ride with a certain criteria, they can choose the search option and choose exactly what they are looking for. If they just want to browse the site to see what rides are being offered or needed they can choose to browse the listings. The last option would be to create a listing. They need to follow a few short steps which will help them make a listing on the website. The rideboard website is very helpful for students who are looking to maybe save some money and carpool for long distance trips! Make sure you have your students check it out.

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

This Friday students will have the opportunity to learn about Michigan Tech's 200+ student organizations at K-Day. K-Day, otherwise known as Keweenaw Day, is a long standing Michigan Tech tradition in which students are dismissed from classes at 12:00 p.m. and shuttled to McLain State Park for an afternoon of fun, food, and giveaways. In this week's article on ParentNet (http://parentnet.mtu.edu/weekly/) I will further discuss the events that will be taking place at K-Day. I will also share information with you about another upcoming Michigan Tech tradition, the Parade of Nations.

The first week of classes have come and gone, along with the various fun activities of Welcome Week. From a comedian, to the Community Expo, to the first women’s soccer game, this past week has been a great time for students to get more acquainted with the Michigan Tech campus and one another. Many students spent this Labor Day weekend exploring the local area, visiting the Upper Peninsula’s beautiful waterfalls, and having bonfires at the beach. It was truly a great weekend to enjoy the last little bit of summer we are left with. The next couple weekends Michigan Tech student’s have the opportunity to continue learning about campus and the local area by attending Keweenaw Day and the Parade of Nations.

This upcoming Friday, Keweenaw Day will take place at McLain State Park. K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is one of Michigan Tech’s longstanding traditions that takes place every September. On K-Day students are dismissed from classes at 12:00 p.m. so they can make their way out to McLain State Park to enjoy the afternoon’s festivities. Students may take their own vehicles out to McLain State Park or they may choose to take the free shuttle. The shuttles leave from the Memorial Union Building every half hour starting at 12:00 p.m. At McLain State Park, students have the opportunity to learn more about Michigan Tech’s student organizations. Many student organizations have booths set up with fun activities, prizes, and giveaways. Students are able to mingle with the variety of organizations present at K-Day to learn a little bit more about what the different organizations do, where they hold organizational meetings, and how they can join. From academic to service organizations, from Greek organizations to club sports, Michigan Tech really has it all. With over 200 student organizations, each one representing various interests, hobbies, and associations, there truly is the opportunity for every student to get involved. As a senior at Michigan Tech, I can say that some of my closest friendships and most memorable experiences have come from my involvement with the student organizations here. I strongly encourage all students, especially those who are first-years, to get to know more about Michigan Tech’s student organizations by going out to McLain State Park on Friday, for K-Day. Involvement in student organizations helps a student not only make great friends, but also provides great opportunities for leadership development, all while having a great time! For more information about the range of student organizations and involvement opportunities available here at Michigan Tech, click on the link to the Student Organizations website.

Parade of Nations

With over 70 countries represented by students attending Michigan Tech it is rather fitting that there be an event to celebrate the diverse heritages of Michigan Tech students. Next Saturday, September 18th, Michigan Tech will be hosting the twenty-first annual Parade of Nations. This year’s theme is “Many Nations, One Heart.” The Parade of Nations events will include a parade starting at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Multicultural Food and a Music Festival in the Dee Stadium in downtown Houghton. The parade will begin at the Hancock Middle School, will travel across the Portage Lift Bridge, and will end in Houghton. The parade will display various cultures and will include floats, banners, flags, and the Michigan Tech pep band. This event is a great opportunity for students and the local community to learn more about the different cultures around the world and to celebrate diversity on the Michigan Tech campus.

Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have. Don’t forget to check back for next week’s article in which I will be writing about the Michigan Tech tradition of Family Weekend.
