Welcome Week

September 2, 2009 in Community, Events by Angela Hoffman

A fun-filled Orientation Week has wrapped up and classes have finally begun.  This means it is time for Michigan Tech to officially welcome new students to campus and to welcome back returning students with Welcome Week.  This week is one of my favorite times as a Michigan Tech student as I find myself constantly reminded of the many reasons why I chose to make Michigan Tech my new home.  A variety of activities are being held throughout this week, giving students the opportunity to meet new people, get involved with campus activities, and really get into the Husky Spirit!

This week kicked off on Monday with Campus Maps and Breakfast which was served outside various academic buildings by President Glenn Mroz, the University Executive Team, and the college and department deans.  Monday evening closed with the Coffee House held at the Library.  Students had the opportunity to view a live acoustic concert while enjoying a coffee or treat from the new “Learn a Latte” Coffee Shop in the library.  Tuesday morning began with the annual Grow Something! event in which the Inter-Residence Hall Council gave students a little piece of home by giving away hundreds of complimentary plants.

There are many more fun events planned for the rest of Welcome Week.  This week’s upcoming events include the Community Expo, an Outdoor Adventure Program trip, the Chris Cagle Labor Day Concert, among many other activities complete with giveaways and prizes.  The Community Expo, to be held on Wednesday on the Campus Green, will allow students to get more familiar with local businesses and resources.

On Friday students will have the opportunity to take a short trip to Hungarian Falls with the Outdoor Adventure Program. This trip will give interested students the chance to experience some of the great outdoors that the Upper Peninsula has to offer.  Welcome Week will officially come to a close on Labor Day with a concert by country music artist Chris Cagle, in which Michigan Tech students can get tickets to attend for FREE!

K-Day

Just in case Michigan Tech students didn’t have enough fun during Welcome Week, this next Friday, September 11, the Michigan Tech tradition of K-Day will continue.  K-Day, otherwise known as Keweenaw Day, is a day of fun and good times for all.  On this day students will get out of class at noon and shuttles will take them out to McLain State Park, where they will enjoy free food, music, and many other activities.  The event runs from 12-4pm and shuttles in the past years have left from the Memorial Union Building every half hour to take students out to the park.  K-Day provides Michigan Tech student’s the opportunity to not only have a good time but also to get to know a little bit more about the over 200 student organizations that are here at Michigan Tech.  For more information about this year’s K-Day activities follow the link to theK-Day website.

Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments, or suggestions!  Have a great week!  -Angela
