Past Weekend Events

It has been yet another successful and eventful weekend here at Michigan Tech. This past Saturday the twentieth annual Parade of Nations took place. This year’s theme was “Dancing with Diversity” and included a parade that traveled across the Portage Lift Bridge, as well as food and music at the Dee Stadium in downtown Houghton. The event was a great opportunity for students to celebrate and learn more about the cultures of the 70+ countries that are represented by students here at Michigan Tech.

As for other weekend events, this Saturday the Miner’s Cup was on the line as Michigan Tech faced off with Northern at the 1pm football game on Sherman Field. 4,027 people, the second-largest crowd in Sherman Field history showed up to enjoy the great weather and rivalry game. Unfortunately, Northern Michigan took the Miner’s Cup this weekend as Michigan Tech lost their first home game. The football game was still a great time with picture perfect weather, the infamous pep band, and free giveaways. The Huskies second home football game will take place next Saturday, September 26 at 6pm against Grand Valley State.

Michigan Tech Career Services has been very busy planning this year’s Career Fair as well as helping students prepare for the big day. This last week Career Services held a Resume Blitz in the Memorial Union Building Commons in which students could bring in their resumes and have Career Services staff look them over and give some helpful tips. This week Career Services is hosting Interview Skills Week in which students can schedule appointments to practice interviewing. This is a great opportunity for students to get more familiar with what an interview process may be like and also to get vital feedback.

Some other events coming up this week that are hosted by Career Services include sessions about the Benefits of a Co-op or Internship and Career Fair Prep. The Benefits of a Co-op or Internship Session is going to be held on Tuesday, September 22nd at 6pm in the Memorial Union Building. Michigan Tech students who have participated in the co-op or internship program will be on hand to talk about their experiences and representatives from Kimberly Clark Corporation will be there to give tips from their perspective. The Career Fair Prep Session will be held on Wednesday, Septmeber 23rd at 6pm in the Memorial Union Building and will cover what students should expect at the Career Fair, what they should wear, and how they can be successful in landing that co-op, internship, or job.

Michigan Tech Career Services host lots of great events throughout the year to help students with career development and job placement. Events range from the Resume Blitz and the Interview Skills Week mentioned above to a Dining Etiquette Dinner , Networking Skills session, and Negotiating Job Offers meeting. A complete list of events offered by Career Services can be found on the Career Center’s Online Calendar.
