Also taking place this weekend was the McNair Hall Association’s Fall Ball. The Fall Ball was held in the West McNair Lounge on Saturday, November 14 from 9 p.m.-12 a.m. The dance provided students with the opportunity to dress up for the evening and dance the night away.

Find Your Fit in Student Life

After going through Orientation or living in the Residence Halls many students may be wondering how they can be employed through Student Life with a job as a Resident Assistant, Program Coordinator, Learning Community Mentor, Management Assistant, Orientation Team Leader, Commuter Mentor, or Reception Desk Staff. Housing and Residential Life and COMPASS (the Center for Orientation, Mentoring, and Academic Student Success) are currently beginning the hiring process for the above positions. Students interested in a position with Student Life need to attend one of the five information sessions for their application to be considered. The information session will give an overview of the various positions available with Student Life and students will also get to hear from students currently working for Student Life about some of their experiences. After attending one of the information sessions students will be emailed the application form. Upon filling out the application and finalizing their resume students will need to go to NACElink to upload their documents and choose their first position choice. Applications are due no later than January 21, 2010. Once applications are submitted the interview process will begin. Their are two sections to the interview process. The first interview is a group process interview which is an interactive group interview. There are three group process interviews scheduled so students can choose the one that fits their schedule the best. The second interview is an individual interview that will last approximately 30 minutes. On Monday, February 22 decision letters will be available for students to pick up informing them whether or not they have been selected as a member of the 2010-2011 Student Life Staff. For detailed job descriptions and more information about the dates and times of information sessions and group process interviews please check out the Find Your Fit in Student Life link.

From my personal experience as an Orientation Team Leader and as the Coordinator at the Wadsworth Hall Reception Desk I can tell you that a position with Student Life both through Housing and Residential Life and through COMPASS is a very rewarding experience. A position with Student Life is a great opportunity to showcase and further develop your leadership skills all while helping fellow students have a great experience here at Michigan Tech. If you like helping students, working as a team, and being in a leadership role I strongly recommend you “find your fit” with Student Life!

If you have any questions about the Student Life hiring process please feel free to email me or joinstudentlife@mtu.edu.

With less than two weeks until Fall Break, Michigan Tech students are excited to take some time off from classes to relax and spend time with friends and loved ones. This year’s Fall Break will be from Saturday, November 21 to Saturday, November 28. Students who wish to leave campus have several options for traveling back home for the week. The Inter-Residence Hall Council Rideboard is available online for Michigan Tech students to post a ride request if they are in search of a ride or to post a trip indicating where they are headed if they have a vehicle. This is a great way for students who live in the same region to pair up, split gas money, and have enjoyable company on the ride home. Students may also choose to take the Indian Trails Bus home. The routes for the Indian Trails bus will be advertised via posters and will also be available on the Indian Trials Website under the Scheduled Routes.

Reminders for Students

It's always nice to spend time with family!

All students who live in the Residence Halls should have received a “You Deserve a Break!” newsletter in their mailbox at some point throughout this last week. This newsletter has all the important information about when the Dining Halls, Campus Café, and Reception Desks will be closing for Fall Break. The newsletter also contains important reminders for students leaving campus for Fall Break regarding room security and parking. For students who are planning on leaving campus for Fall Break it is important to remember to close and lock the windows, unplug nonessential electrical equipment, turn off lights, and lock the doors before leaving for the week. The University also encourages students who will not be using their vehicles frequently to leave their car at home during the winter months since the amount of space in the lots is greatly reduced due to snow. As an additional reminder, students who are not taking their vehicles home over Fall Break or who are staying in the Residence Halls over Fall Break need to make sure their vehicle is moved to commuter Lot 26 by Sunday, November 22 to avoid towing and then move it back to their assigned Lot by Sunday, November 29. Students with bikes will also need to make sure that their bikes are removed from the bike racks by Friday, November 20 so that the bike racks may be moved to different locations that are more convenient for winter snow removal. Students may use the bike racks again once they are put in their permanent winter location or they may place their bikes in on-campus storage on Sunday, November 15 from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Students who wish to stay on campus during Fall Break or for part of Fall Break will need to register at their Residence Hall Reception Desk by Thursday, November 19. This includes students who plan on leaving after Saturday, November 21 or who plan on returning prior to Sunday, November 29. There is no extra charge for staying in the Residence Halls during fall break. Kitchenettes in the Residence Halls will be open over Fall Break for students to use as the Dining Halls will all be closed by Friday, November 20 at 6 p.m. and will not reopen until Monday, November 30. November 23-25 the Food Mall in the Memorial Union Building will be open November from 7:30am-3:00pm and the Library Cafe will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to serve students who wish to stay during Fall Break.

Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have! Have a wonderful time with your student over Fall Break!

Saturday night’s game ended with St. Cloud State taking away a 3:1 win over Michigan Tech. This next weekend promises to be another exciting weekend for Michigan Tech Hockey as Michigan Tech hosts North Dakota in a pair of games November 6 and 7.

LeaderShape®

The LeaderShape Institute® is a great opportunity available for Michigan Tech students. LeaderShape® is an intensive week-long leadership development experience that is designed to help students to “lead with integrity.” Students work in large and small groups as they learn and teach one another through interactive lectures, activities, and discussions. The LeaderShape Institute® has been apart of the Michigan Tech campus since 1995 and this year’s 15th annual LeaderShape® will be held January 4-9, 2010. As a participant in last year’s LeaderShape Institute® I strongly encourage that other students apply to attend. At LeaderShape® I had the opportunity to learn what I can do to be a more effective leader, what my leadership style is, and much more. I must say one of my favorite things about the LeaderShape experience was getting to know some of the Michigan Tech faculty and staff and the opportunity I had to meet new friends.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-155" src="http://parentnet.mtu.edu/weekly/files/2009/11/n1258740023_30253349_2435-300x225.jpg" alt="Did I mention we build Balloon Castles at LeaderShape? Hmm, I thought that might get your attention!

LeaderShape® is held in Alberta, MI at Michigan Tech’s Ford Center. Alberta is approximately 40 miles south of Michigan Tech’s main campus. The Ford Center’s facilities include rooms for the student’s to stay in during the week long institute, a conference room, a dining hall, and lots of trails for the student’s to go out and enjoy during their free time. All students are encouraged to apply for LeaderShape®, however, there is an application process to be chosen as a participant. Each year about 50-60 students are chosen to participate in the LeaderShape Institute®. In addition, there is a minimal cost for attending the Institute but some of the Student Organizations here at Michigan tech may be willing to sponsor members of their organization if they’re chosen to go. All transportation, lodging, and meals are provided and selected students are expected to stay at the Alberta Ford Center for the duration of the Institute.

If you would like to encourage your student to apply for LeaderShape® 2010 the application can be found at http://www-s1.leadershape.org/apprd/2141. This year’s applications will be due by Friday, November 6th and selected participants will be notified within a couple weeks. I will be this year’s On-Site Coordinator for LeaderShape® so please feel free to email me with any questions you may have! Be sure to check back for next week’s article, I will be writing about the upcoming Thanksgiving Break.

Although it may seem as though your student is just now starting to get into the swing of things this semester, Spring Course Registration is quickly approaching. According to the Registration Priority Schedule registration opens Thursday, October 29 at 10 p.m. and closes on Sunday, November 15 at 12 a.m. Graduate students have the first opportunity to register on Thursday, October 29 and then the following days undergraduate students are permitted to register based on the number of credits they have completed. Planning for Spring Course Registration is a great time for students to set up a meeting with their academic adviser to go over career plans and potential course choices. First year students can attend First Year Advising Meetings in which academic advisors will hold a large group meeting with the first year students of each particular degree program. I would strongly encourage that each student schedule an appointment with their academic advisor to fill out their degree program flow chart so they have a good idea of what semester they will be graduating, what degree requirements they still need to fulfill, and whether or not they need any waivers to register for the Spring Semester. Academic advisors are a great resource, with a lot of knowledge and experience regarding courses and career pathways. It is to your students advantage to get to know them!

Health Information

Over the past couple of weeks there has been much concern over the H1N1 flu, however, Michigan Tech has been taking several precautions to decrease the spread of the H1N1 flu and other illnesses. The most recent precaution the university has taken to decrease the spread of H1N1 was the canceling of Safehouse, Michigan Tech’s annual Halloween event. As another precaution the university has purchased respirator masks for students. Currently students that live on campus may go to their Residence Hall Reception Desk and get a respirator mask free of charge. There has also been several hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the Residence Halls for students to use at their convenience. In addition, students have been encouraged to visit the H1N1 Flu Information page on the Michigan Tech website to learn more about the possibility of upcoming H1N1 flu vaccinations, how to prevent getting H1N1, and what symptoms to look for. Michigan Tech is prepared to be accommodating to students who have H1N1 by no longer requiring faculty to obtain doctor’s notes from students to be dismissed from class. If a student has H1N1 they should go to the “Tell us You’re Sick” tab under the H1N1 Flu Information page. This tab will redirect to the student’s Banweb account where they can log in and fill out a form stating that they have the flu. The Dean of Students will then notify each of the student’s instructors via email.

Remember, to avoid the flu the best things you can do are wash your hands frequently, avoid others who are ill, practice respiratory etiquette, and get lots of rest!

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Have a great week and stay healthy! -Angela

The event will begin at 9 p.m. and promises to be full of good times, so encourage your student to come on out and do the Monster Mash!

Safehouse

Saturday, October 31, the day students have been anxiously awaiting all week, finally arrives. Not only is Saturday Halloween but it also the day of Safehouse. Safehouse has been a Michigan Tech campus tradition since 1988. Each year on the last Saturday of October students decorate the residence halls for public tours. The community is invited to bring their children to take tours of the residence halls that are all decorated for Halloween. Student tour guides lead the groups through the tour route. There are three different tour groups this year: Fun (0-7 years), Spooky (5-13 years) and Scary (10-15 years). The students decorate their hall based on the category they choose. The houses that choose to do the fun category do a lot of fun and silly decorations for the younger children. The houses that choose to do the Spooky or Scary category are out for screams and thrills. Their decorations get pretty elaborate and even include some very skilled acting by students as they try to get a shriek from the tour groups that pass through. The event is so widely participated in that the Inter-Residence Hall Council judges the decorations and offers awards to the top winning houses. Safehouse is a great event to participate in and I can’t think of a better way to get more into the Halloween Spirit.

From tug of war to cardboard boat races, from broomball, to hockey, to football, Homecoming 2009 was a huge success! Homecoming events took place every evening this past week and included activities such as Take on a Husky Night, a community service project, Powder Puff Football, and Homecoming Games. Friday, preparation for Saturday’s big Homecoming game began with the Homecoming Parade that ran through the Michigan Tech campus, followed by a pep rally that included performances from the Michigan Tech dance team and pep band. Friday night came to a victorious end as Michigan Tech hockey won the season opener 5-3 against Northern Michigan University. A crowd of 3,409 people showed up at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena to watch the Huskies make their third straight win over their rivals, the Northern Wildcats.

Our Michigan Tech Huskies play football, rain or shine, OR SNOW!

Much to student’s dismay after a lovely sunny afternoon on Friday we woke up to snow on Saturday morning! A mix of rain and snow, coupled with a wind advisory couldn’t keep our Michigan Tech Husky fans away from the 2009 Homecoming Game. Although there was very little accumulation, there was enough snow on the ground for a group of students to build a small snowman before they headed up to the football game. Michigan Tech’s Homecoming football game took place on Sherman Field at 1pm on Saturday against the Findlay Oilers. It was a tough game given the state of the weather and the Huskies were defeated by the Oilers 14-5. At half time the Homecoming 2009 King and Queen were announced along with the winners of the week’s Homecoming Games. Our Michigan Tech Huskies return to play at Sherman Field on Saturday, Ocotober 24 at 1pm against Saginaw Valley State University.

Community Service

The puppy poodles I walked at the Copper Country Humane Society on Saturday.

Michigan Tech offers many great opportunities for students to take part in a variety of community service activities. Make A Difference Day is one of the most widely participated in community service events at Michigan Tech. Last year over 450 students took part in the day of volunteering. Make A Difference Day was created by USA WEEKEND Magazine and is recognized as a national day of service. Make A Difference Day takes place the fourth Saturday of every October, so this year it will be Saturday, October 24th. For this year’s Make A Difference Day interested students and student organizations will be working on various community service projects throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula.

In addition, to Make A Difference Day, Michigan Tech Student Activities Office coordinates other community service activities. Service Saturdays, 60 Minutes of Service, Semester Collections and Alternative Spring Break are great ways for students to get involved with community service. Michigan Tech also has several student organizations whose sole purpose is organizing service projects in the local community. Students may also choose to organize their own service projects by dog walking or cat cuddling at the Copper Country Humane Society, chopping wood with Little-Brothers Friends of the Elderly, or being a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Here at Michigan Tech and the surrounding area the options really are limitless when it comes to volunteering and community service.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Check back for next week’s article, I will be writing about the Michigan Tech tradition of SafeHouse.

This weekend the Michigan Tech Huskies hosted their first home hockey game of the season, dominating the ice and defeating Ryerson 3-1 at the Saturday night game. That same evening our Michigan Tech Huskies Football Team traveled to Grand Rapids to play against Ferris State University at the Fifth Thirds Ballpark. The Huskies won the Battle at the BallPark 38-6.

On Monday evening the Michigan Tech girls will have the opportunity to take part in Powder Puff Football. Wednesday’s activities include a service project at the Little Huskies Development Center and the Homecoming Court Dinner where the Michigan Tech 2009 Homecoming King and Queen will be decided. On Thursday students can compete with their student group in the Homecoming Games including a relay race, tug of war, and a sand castle building contest.
Construction on Michigan Tech’s New Residential Apartment Building is officially underway. The Michigan Technological Board of Control gave the approval on May 1, 2009 for the new residential apartment not to exceed 16.5 million. Construction began on the new building on July 20, 2009 and currently the construction crew with Gundlach Champion, Inc. is working Monday-Saturday to complete the building. The building is currently scheduled to open for Alumni Weekend, August 5th-7th, 2010. You can check out the progress of the construction LIVE from the Construction Cam.

The Building

The new residential apartment building is located behind McNair Hall and just below Michigan Tech’s lower Daniell Heights Apartments. As a sort of transitional living between the Residence Halls and Daniell Heights Apartments, priority will be given to students based on credits, with Graduate Students given top priority for contracting to live in the new building. Students may contract to live in the building for Fall 2010 when Spring Recontracting opens in March 2010. The New Residential Apartment Building will house 192 students. Most units will include 4 beds, each in a separate room and a common area complete with a cooking and sitting area. Check out the Floor Plans for more information about what the new building’s units will look like.

Construction is underway on the New Residential Apartment Building.

Building Amenities

The new residential apartment building will include a sauna, a workout facility, laundry facilities, and several lounges. There is currently an appointed committee of students working with Michigan Tech Housing Professional Staff to determine what exactly the lounges and building units will include, right down to the furniture. The committee will also be deciding things like what sort of options students living in the building will have for a meal plan if they choose not to cook every meal in their unit as well as if payments for the units will be made by the month or by the semester.

LEED Certification

The new residential apartment building under current plans qualifies for LEED Silver Certification. LEED is a third-party certification program and is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED promotes sustainability and bases certifications off of 5 key areas of human and environmental health. The 5 key areas include sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Michigan Tech is excelling in each of these 5 areas, especially building in a sustainable site, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. For those of you traveling to Michigan Tech for Family Weekend have a safe trip and perhaps I will see you around on campus. Also, don’t forget to wish your students good luck at the Career Fair taking place this Tuesday, September 29! Check back for next week’s article, I will be writing about the upcoming Homecoming Festivities.

It has been yet another successful and eventful weekend here at Michigan Tech. This past Saturday the twentieth annual Parade of Nations took place. This year’s theme was “Dancing with Diversity” and included a parade that traveled across the Portage Lift Bridge, as well as food and music at the Dee Stadium in downtown Houghton. The event was a great opportunity for students to celebrate and learn more about the cultures of the 70+ countries that are represented by students here at Michigan Tech.

As for other weekend events, this Saturday the Miner’s Cup was on the line as Michigan Tech faced off with Northern at the 1pm football game on Sherman Field. 4,027 people, the second-largest crowd in Sherman Field history showed up to enjoy the great weather and rivalry game. Unfortunately, Northern Michigan took the Miner’s Cup this weekend as Michigan Tech lost their first home game. The football game was still a great time with picture perfect weather, the infamous pep band, and free giveaways. The Huskies second home football game will take place next Saturday, September 26 at 6pm against Grand Valley State.

2009 Career Fair

Come one, come all, come to the Career Fair! This year’s Fall Semester Career Fair will be held at the Student Development Complex on Tuesday, September 29th from 12-6 p.m. Currently there are 157 companies registered for the Career Fair and with the event a week away, more companies are continuing to register everyday. To view information about the companies currently registered for the Fall Career Fair check out this Registered Employers link.

Students at the 2008 Career Fair.

Michigan Tech Career Services has been very busy planning this year’s Career Fair as well as helping students prepare for the big day. This last week Career Services held a Resume Blitz in the Memorial Union Building Commons in which students could bring in their resumes and have Career Services staff look them over and give some helpful tips. This week Career Services is hosting Interview Skills Week in which students can schedule appointments to practice interviewing. This is a great opportunity for students to get more familiar with what an interview process may be like and also to get vital feedback.

Some other events coming up this week that are hosted by Career Services include sessions about the Benefits of a Co-op or Internship and Career Fair Prep. The Benefits of a Co-op or Internship Session is going to be held on Tuesday, September 22nd at 6pm in the Memorial Union Building. Michigan Tech students who have participated in the co-op or internship program will be on hand to talk about their experiences and representatives from Kimberly Clark Corporation will be there to give tips from their perspective. The Career Fair Prep Session will be held on Wednesday, Septmeber 23rd at 6pm in the Memorial Union Building and will cover what students should expect at the Career Fair, what they should wear, and how they can be successful in landing that co-op, internship, or job.

Michigan Tech Career Services host lots of great events throughout the year to help students with career development and job placement. Events range from the Resume Blitz and the Interview Skills Week mentioned above to a Dining Etiquette Dinner , Networking Skills session, and Negotiating Job Offers meeting. A complete list of events offered by Career Services can be found on the Career Center’s Online Calendar.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Next week I will be writing about the new residence hall that is currently under construction. Learn more about how many students it will accommodate, the style of the rooms, and more!

This past Friday, yet another successful K-Day took place out at McLain State Park. Fun and good times were had by all as students were dismissed from classes at noon and were taken via shuttles to the park. From 12-4 p.m. students had the opportunity to enjoy free food, music, and various activities.

In addition to the great fun and fellowship, this campus tradition also provided students with the chance to learn more about Michigan Tech’s student organizations. Many of the student organizations had booths with activities, prizes, and giveaways. Students were able to mingle with the variety of organizations present at K-Day to learn a little bit more about what the different organizations do, where they meet, and how they can join.

Any hobby or activity that you think a college student might be interested in; Michigan Tech has a student organization representing it. From Academic to Service Organizations, from Greek Organizations to Club Sports Michigan Tech really has it all. With over 200 student organizations, each one representing various interests, hobbies, and associations, there truly is the opportunity for every student to get involved. As a second year student I can say that some of my closest friendships and most memorable experiences have come from my involvement with the student organizations here at Michigan Tech. I strongly encourage all students, but especially those who are first-years to get to know more about the organizations they saw out at K-Day and to get involved in some of them. Involvement in student organizations helps a student not only make great friends but also provides great opportunities for leadership development, all while having a great time! For more information about the range of student organizations and involvement opportunities available here at Michigan Tech, follow the link to the Student Organizations website.

Parade of Nations

A float at the 2008 Parade of Nations.

With over 70 countries represented by students attending Michigan Tech it is rather fitting that there by an event to celebrate the diverse heritages of Michigan Tech students. This Saturday, September 19th, Michigan Tech will be hosting the twentieth annual Parade of Nations. This year’s theme is “Dancing with Diversity” and will include a parade starting at 11 a.m., followed by Multicultural Food and a Music Festival in the Dee Stadium in downtown Houghton. The parade will begin at Hancock Middle school and will travel across the Portage Lift Bridge, ending in Houghton. The parade will display various cultures and ethnicities and will include floats, banners, flags, and the pep band. This event is a great opportunity for students and the local community to learn more about the different cultures around the world.

Football Game Saturday!

Also this Saturday, Michigan Tech hosts the first home football game of the season against Northern Michigan University. The game begins at 1 p.m. on Sherman Field and promises to be a great time. What a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than cheering on the huskies, listening to the pep band, and watching some great football! Checkout the Athletics Homepage for more information about Michigan Tech Athletics.
