I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break with your student! For those of you who had the opportunity to drive your student back to Michigan Tech you may have noticed the warm temperatures and sunny skies here in Houghton, MI. To Michigan Tech, students the melting snow and blooming flowers symbolize the end to another great winter sports season. In this week's article on ParentNet (parentnet.mtu.edu/weekly/), I will be discussing Mont Ripley's end of season Easter Egg Hunt and Slush Pit. I will also include some important reminders regarding Recontracting to live in the Residence Halls next year and Course Registration.

Flowers are blooming in the Houghton and Hancock area!

Parents I hope you all had a fantastic time with your student over Spring Break and students welcome back! For those of you who had the opportunity to drive your student back up to Michigan Tech you may have noticed that it is looking an awful lot like Spring in Houghton, MI. The past week’s temperatures have been in the high 40’s and 50’s during the day, much to the students delight. The snow is melting and believe it or not there are even some spring flowers beginning to bloom around campus. On Monday, the students’ first day back to class after Spring Break, we were greeted with a beautiful and sunny 55 degree day. I was amazed at the different definitions that students have for what is appropriate to wear when the high for the day is 55 degrees. Students who were somewhat overzealous for the early arrival of spring could be seen in tank tops, shorts, and flip flops. Other students seemed to be fearing that the fury of winter might return by the time they got out of class and they sported scarves and winter coats.

Skiing Mont Ripley this past Sunday.

End of the Winter Season

Although no one can complain about such beautiful weather, some students are sad to see a great season of winter sports come to a close. The snow on the Michigan Tech Trails is quickly disappearing which means it’s time to put away the cross country skis and snowshoes and pull out the mountain bike! Mont Ripley, Michigan Tech’s ski hill is also quickly losing snow. At this time Mt. Ripley is still 75% covered but they will be closed Monday-Thursday and opened only on weekends for the rest of the season if the snow continues to melt. On Saturday, March 27 Mont Ripley will be holding their end of the season Easter Egg Hunt and Slush Pit. The Easter Egg hunt will start at 10am. Hundreds of eggs will be hidden all over Mont Ripley and there will be prizes in every egg. Whoever finds the special golden egg will have the chance of winning a new mountain bike or a Mont Ripley season pass. In total there will be over $3,000 worth of prizes to win at the event. The slush pit will begin at 2pm. During the slush pit skiers and snowboards will attempt to either cross 60 feet of open water or make a great splash. Prizes are available for the “most outrageous performance by a guy and gal”. The Easter Egg Hunt and Slush Pit are a great opportunity for students to celebrate the end of another great winter season.

Recontracting and Course Registration

Lastly, I would like to remind parents and students that recontracting to live in the Residence Halls is currently taking place. Take a look at the Recontracting Timeline to determine when your student can recontract to live in the Residence Halls. When your student can recontract depends on whether they will be recontracting for the same room or if they plan moving to a different room or a different Residence Hall. The Recontracting Timeline allows students who would like to remain in their same room to recontract first, on March 15. Students who would like to move to a different room or to a different Residence Hall can recontract on the days following, according to the Recontracting Timeline. Also taking place in the next couple weeks is Fall Course Registration. According to the Fall 2010 Registration Priority Schedule registration opens Thursday, March 18 at 10 p.m. and closes on Sunday, April 4 at 12 a.m. Graduate students have the first opportunity to register on Thursday, March 18 and then the following days undergraduate students are permitted to register based on the number of credits they have completed. I encourage your student to take a look on Banweb prior to their scheduled registration slot to see what courses are offered during the fall semester. Planning ahead and getting course waivers ahead of time and planning around courses with conflicting times can save a lot of time and make registration go much smoother.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Have a great week! -Ang

The festivities and fun of Winter Carnival 2010 are coming to a close but what great memories this past week has left us with! This Friday and Saturday our Michigan Tech Huskies Hockey team faced off against No. 6 Minnesota Duluth. Michigan Tech won Friday’s game 3-1 and battled to the end on Saturday losing 2-3. Michigan Tech earned the Winter Carnival title for the first time since 2007 with their 5-4 total goal advantage this weekend. Highlights of the Minnesota Duluth series can be found on the athletics page. Also taking place in sports this past week were wins by our Men’s and Women’s basketball team against Tiffin and Ashland.

Phi Kappa Tau's winning statue in the fraternity division.

In addition to an exciting weekend of Husky Athletics many students spent their Thursday and Friday off from class spending time with friends and family and taking a look at the phenomenal snow statues. Students worked through the night on Wednesday with their student organizations on the snow statues. At 8 a.m. on Thursday morning the statues were judged based on first impression, the description that accompanies the statue, lettering, artistic value, effort, intricacy, proportion, neatness, whiteness of snow, and it’s relation to the winter carnival theme. For a complete listing of the first through third place statue winners for the one-nighter and month-long statues in each division check out the 2010 Winter Carnival site.

Upcoming Spring Career Fair

Now that students are heading back to class after a refreshing Winter Carnival recess it is time to get focused and start thinking about landing that summer internship or co-op. The 2010 Spring Career Fair will take place on Tuesday, February 16 from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. in the Student Development Complex. Currently there are 98 companies registered for the Career Fair and with the event a week away, more companies are continuing to register everyday. To view information about the companies currently registered for the Spring Career Fair check out this Registered Employers link.

Michigan Tech Career Services has been very busy planning this year’s Career Fair as well as helping students prepare for the big day. The past couple weeks the Career Services held a Resume Blitz in the Memorial Union Building Commons and in the Residence Halls in which students could bring their resumes to Career Services Staff who would look them over and provide some helpful tips. This week Career Services is hosting Interview Skills Week in which students can schedule appointments to practice interviewing. This is a great opportunity for students to get more familiar with what an interview process may be like and also to get vital feedback. Students may participate in Interview Skills Week by registering for a one-on-one appointment with Career Services Staff on the Career Services website or by visiting the Harold Meese Building.

Michigan Tech Career Services host lots of great events throughout the year to help students with career development and job placement. Events range from the Resume Blitz and the Interview Skills Week mentioned above to a Dining Etiquette Dinner, Networking Skills session, and Negotiating Job Offers meeting. A complete list of events offered by Career Services can be found on the Career Center’s Online Calendar.

With this lovely Wednesday afternoon marking the beginning of Michigan Tech’s famous Winter Carnival All-Nighter, the students have headed out to the statue sites and they are ready to work their way through the night, making what they hope will be an award winning statue. Many students have been working since they returned to Michigan Tech this semester on month long statues. For them, the All-Nighter will be spent putting fine details on their statues. Many students who don’t chose to work a month long statue choose to work on the one night statues. For the students who choose to work on the one night statues their All-Nighter will be spent laboring away trying to shape and detail a snow statue in just 16 hours. It truly is amazing what our Michigan Tech students can do in just a few hours with a bunch of snow, water, butterknives, and irons!

Students competing in the Yooper Sprint Special Event.

Tomorrow statue judging will take place at 8 a.m. and the winners will be determined. In addition to the competition of who can build the best statue there are several other competitive events that the student organizations take part in. Winter Carnival Special Events began last weekend and are continuing throughout this weekend. Some of the Special Events that took place last weekend include ice bowling, snow volleyball, broomball, curling, and icefishing. Tomorrow the competitions continue with the Beards Competition, Banner Contest, and Stage Revue. The Beards Competition is a skit performance in which gentleman who have been growing their beards since early December try to impress the judges with their beards, goatees, and sideburns with the addition of funny costumes, skits, and songs. The Stage Revue Performances are also a lot of fun to watch. Stage Revue Performances are humorous skits that are put together by student organizations back in December. The students performing in Stage Revue have been practicing for almost two months now to be ready to perform in the Rozsa Center on Thursday night.

Students participating in the Special Event Ice Bowling.

On Friday and Saturday the Special Events continue with downhill skiing, snowboarding, tug-o-war, and much more. For a complete listing of this weekend’s events check out the 2010 Winter Carnival Schedule. Winter Carnival 2010 will wrap up on Saturday evening with the Torch Light Parade beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Mount Ripley followed by a fireworks display. At 9 p.m. in the MUB Commons the Awards Ceremony will take place and the student organizations will find out who is the overall winner of Winter Carnival is!

For those of you parents who have traveled up here for Winter Carnival I hope you have a fantastic time! As for those of you were not able to make the venture to our little winter wonderland tell your students to take lots of photos! If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me.
After an unseasonably warm past couple weeks you may not believe it but Winter Carnival 2010 is just around the corner. Students are hoping that with the dropping temperatures and snow that this week is expected to bring, they will be able to get back to working on their snow statues and playing broomball. The official dates of Winter Carnival 2010 are February 3-6 and this year’s theme is “Games We Know Captured in Snow”. I’m sure most of you have heard or maybe even seen some of the great Winter Carnival activities, however, for those of you who may not know, Winter Carnival is more than just amazing, skillfully constructed snow statues, it is really a week of great fun!

Winter Carnival Queen 2009-Melissa Meyer

This year’s Winter Carnival activities will begin this Saturday, January 30 with the Queen’s Coronation in the Rozsa Center from 7:30 p.m.-12 a.m. During this time the eight Queen Candidates will perform a talent and take part in an onstage interview. Winter Carnival Queen 2010 will be chosen based on the interviews, talent performance, and a student vote. Student’s may vote for the candidate of their choice this Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Building or Fisher Hall. The candidate crowned Winter Carnival Queen 2010 will have various responsibilities throughout Winter Carnival, including judging statues, attending events, and what would be my favorite part, riding the Zamboni at the hockey game against Minnesota Duluth. For more information about this year’s candidates check out the Queen’s page of the Winter Carnival website.

Students playing snowvolleyball last year.

In addition, this weekend, to kick off the approaching Winter Carnival activities there will be two hockey games in which the Huskies will face off against Minnesota State. Friday nights game will begin at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday nights game will begin at 5:07 p.m. If your student is not too busy working on a snow statue or attending the Queen’s Coronation I recommend that they get their tickets to the game and go out and cheer on our Huskies!

Lastly, throughout this week there will be a variety of Winter Carnival Special Events that students can take part in. This week’s Special Events include the following:

Snow Volley Ice Fishing Cross Country Skiing

Ice Bowling Curling Skating

These special events are a lot of fun to participate in or to watch so I would encourage your student to go and see what Michigan Tech Winter Carnival is all about. For a complete listing of this week’s special events check out the Winter Carnival Schedule.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Check back for next week’s article, I will be writing about how this week’s Winter Carnival Activities went and what events are coming up with the Winter Carnival All-Nighter!

It seems Mother Nature has finally decided to grace Houghton with her lovely wintery presence. Over the past week Houghton has accumulated about 16 inches of snow on the ground and I’m sure there’s a lot more where that came from. As of right now Houghton is under a Winter Storm Warning until Thursday, December 10. This storm is expected to leave Houghton with another 12-18 inches of snow. For many of our Michigan Tech students this means one thing, the beginning of winter sports! Michigan Tech students are looking forward to the opening of Mt.Ripley, Michigan Tech’s very own ski hill. Currently, Mt. Ripley is scheduled to open on Saturday, December 12.

Final Exams

The snow on the ground and the quietness all around also means something else for our Michigan Tech students . . . the beginning of final exams! Final exams will take place the week of Monday, December 14. Starting Saturday, December 12 at midnight 22 hour quiet hours will go into effect in the residence halls. This means that students in the Residence Halls must remain quiet and be respectful to those who are studying in the Residence Halls 22 hours a day.

Final exams can be a very stressful time for students, however, various university departments have activities and programs throughout the week to help students relax and ease their stress. One of the events that take place during finals week and the week prior are Snack Attacks. Snack Attacks are sponsored by a different university department each evening as staff from the department pass out snacks to students in the Residence Halls and the Library. More information about Snack Attacks and other stress relieving activities that are planned for students are posted throughout campus.

Reminders for Students

Once students complete their final exams they are free to leave for Winter Break. Students who live in the Residence Halls will need to make sure that they tell their Resident Assistant when they plan on leaving. As students are preparing to leave for Winter Break it is important to remember that the electricity will be turned off in their room. This means students will want to unplug any electrical items, close and lock their windows, and turn down their thermostats. It is also important for students to remember to leave their refrigerator door open and place a towel underneath their refrigerator so they are not left with a mess when they come back in January. Also, students with an empty space in their room will want to make sure that half the room is cleaned and prepared for another roommate prior to Winter Break; students who do not do so will be charged $100. Students who are assigned a new roommate over Winter Break will receive a notification with their new roommate’s information via email, letter, or phone.

All students who live in the Residence Halls should have received a “You Deserve a Break!” newsletter in their mailbox at some point throughout this last week. This newsletter has all the important information about when the Dining Halls, Campus Café, and Reception Desks will be closing for Winter Break. The newsletter also contains important reminders for students leaving campus for Winter Break regarding room security, parking, and other procedures. In general it is expected that all students will leave the Michigan Tech Residence Halls for Winter Break. Residents who must stay for Winter Break or who plan to leave after December 19 at noon must request permission by filling out the Early Arrival Late Departure Form located on the Housing website. Students will receive an email within 7 business days informing them whether or not they have been approved to stay in the Residence Halls over Winter Break. In addition, students who plan to arrive back to the Residence Halls prior to January 9 at noon will need to fill out the form. There is a $14 per night charge for residents who stay during Winter Break, leave late, or arrive early. It is essential that students who need to stay fill out the form so they can have electricity and swipe access to the Residence Halls.

I wish your student the best of luck on Final Exams! Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have!

Saturday night’s game ended with St. Cloud State taking away a 3:1 win over Michigan Tech. This next weekend promises to be another exciting weekend for Michigan Tech Hockey as Michigan Tech hosts North Dakota in a pair of games November 6 and 7.

LeaderShape®

The LeaderShape Institute® is a great opportunity available for Michigan Tech students. LeaderShape® is an intensive week-long leadership development experience that is designed to help students to “lead with integrity.” Students work in large and small groups as they learn and teach one another through interactive lectures, activities, and discussions. The LeaderShape Institute® has been apart of the Michigan Tech campus since 1995 and this year’s 15th annual LeaderShape® will be held January 4-9, 2010. As a participant in last year’s LeaderShape Institute® I strongly encourage that other students apply to attend. At LeaderShape® I had the opportunity to learn what I can do to be a more effective leader, what my leadership style is, and much more. I must say one of my favorite things about the LeaderShape experience was getting to know some of the Michigan Tech faculty and staff and the opportunity I had to meet new friends.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-155" src="http://parentnet.mtu.edu/weekly/files/2009/11/n1258740023_30253349_2435-300x225.jpg" alt="Did I mention we build Balloon Castles at LeaderShape? Hmm, I thought that might get your attention!

LeaderShape® is held in Alberta, MI at Michigan Tech’s Ford Center. Alberta is approximately 40 miles south of Michigan Tech’s main campus. The Ford Center’s facilities include rooms for the student’s to stay in during the week long institute, a conference room, a dining hall, and lots of trails for the student’s to go out and enjoy during their free time. All students are encouraged to apply for LeaderShape®, however, there is an application process to be chosen as a participant. Each year about 50-60 students are chosen to participate in the LeaderShape Institute®. In addition, there is a minimal cost for attending the Institute but some of the Student Organizations here at Michigan tech may be willing to sponsor members of their organization if they’re chosen to go. All transportation, lodging, and meals are provided and selected students are expected to stay at the Alberta Ford Center for the duration of the Institute.

If you would like to encourage your student to apply for LeaderShape® 2010 the application can be found at http://www-s1.leadershape.org/apprd/2141. This year’s applications will be due by Friday, November 6th and selected participants will be notified within a couple weeks. I will be this year’s On-Site Coordinator for LeaderShape® so please feel free to email me with any questions you may have! Be sure to check back for next week’s article, I will be writing about the upcoming Thanksgiving Break.

Although it may seem as though your student is just now starting to get into the swing of things this semester, Spring Course Registration is quickly approaching. According to the Registration Priority Schedule registration opens Thursday, October 29 at 10 p.m. and closes on Sunday, November 15 at 12 a.m. Graduate students have the first opportunity to register on Thursday, October 29 and then the following days undergraduate students are permitted to register based on the number of credits they have completed. Planning for Spring Course Registration is a great time for students to set up a meeting with their academic adviser to go over career plans and potential course choices. First year students can attend First Year Advising Meetings in which academic advisors will hold a large group meeting with the first year students of each particular degree program. I would strongly encourage that each student schedule an appointment with their academic advisor to fill out their degree program flow chart so they have a good idea of what semester they will be graduating, what degree requirements they still need to fulfill, and whether or not they need any waivers to register for the Spring Semester. Academic advisors are a great resource, with a lot of knowledge and experience regarding courses and career pathways. It is to your students advantage to get to know them!

Health Information

Over the past couple of weeks there has been much concern over the H1N1 flu, however, Michigan Tech has been taking several precautions to decrease the spread of the H1N1 flu and other illnesses. The most recent precaution the university has taken to decrease the spread of H1N1 was the canceling of Safehouse, Michigan Tech’s annual Halloween event. As another precaution the university has purchased respirator masks for students. Currently students that live on campus may go to their Residence Hall Reception Desk and get a respirator mask free of charge. There has also been several hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the Residence Halls for students to use at their convenience. In addition, students have been encouraged to visit the H1N1 Flu Information page on the Michigan Tech website to learn more about the possibility of upcoming H1N1 flu vaccinations, how to prevent getting H1N1, and what symptoms to look for. Michigan Tech is prepared to be accommodating to students who have H1N1 by no longer requiring faculty to obtain doctor’s notes from students to be dismissed from class. If a student has H1N1 they should go to the “Tell us You’re Sick” tab under the H1N1 Flu Information page. This tab will redirect to the student’s Banweb account where they can log in and fill out a form stating that they have the flu. The Dean of Students will then notify each of the student’s instructors via email.

Remember, to avoid the flu the best things you can do are wash your hands frequently, avoid others who are ill, practice respiratory etiquette, and get lots of rest!

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Have a great week and stay healthy! -Angela

Safehouse

Saturday, October 31, the day students have been anxiously awaiting all week, finally arrives. Not only is Saturday Halloween but it also the day of Safehouse. Safehouse has been a Michigan Tech campus tradition since 1988. Each year on the last Saturday of October students decorate the residence halls for public tours. The community is invited to bring their children to take tours of the residence halls that are all decorated for Halloween. Student tour guides lead the groups through the tour route. There are three different tour groups this year: Fun (0-7 years), Spooky (5-13 years) and Scary (10-15 years). The students decorate their hall based on the category they choose. The houses that choose to do the fun category do a lot of fun and silly decorations for the younger children. The houses that choose to do the Spooky or Scary category are out for screams and thrills. Their decorations get pretty elaborate and even include some very skilled acting by students as they try to get a shriek from the tour groups that pass through. The event is so widely participated in that the Inter-Residence Hall Council judges the decorations and offers awards to the top winning houses. Safehouse is a great event to participate in and I can’t think of a better way to get more into the Halloween Spirit.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to email me. Please check back for next week’s article, I will be writing about Spring Course Registration.

Homecoming events took place every evening this past week and included activities such as Take on a Husky Night, a community service project, Powder Puff Football, and Homecoming Games. Friday, preparation for Saturday’s big Homecoming game began with the Homecoming Parade that ran through the Michigan Tech campus, followed by a pep rally that included performances from the Michigan Tech dance team and pep band. Friday night came to a victorious end as Michigan Tech hockey won the season opener 5-3 against Northern Michigan University. A crowd of 3,409 people showed up at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena to watch the Huskies make their third straight win over their rivals, the Northern Wildcats.

Much to student’s dismay after a lovely sunny afternoon on Friday we woke up to snow on Saturday morning! A mix of rain and snow, coupled with a wind advisory couldn’t keep our Michigan Tech Husky fans away from the 2009 Homecoming Game. Although there was very little accumulation, there was enough snow on the ground for a group of students to build a small snowman before they headed up to the football game. Michigan Tech’s Homecoming football game took place on Sherman Field at 1pm on Saturday against the Findlay Oilers. It was a tough game given the state of the weather and the Huskies were defeated by the Oilers 14-5. At half time the Homecoming 2009 King and Queen were announced along with the winners of the week’s Homecoming Games. Our Michigan Tech Huskies return to play at Sherman Field on Saturday, Ocotober 24 at 1pm against Saginaw Valley State University.

Community Service

Michigan Tech offers many great opportunities for students to take part in a variety of community service activities. Make A Difference Day is one of the most widely participated in community service events at Michigan Tech. Last year over 450 students took part in the day of volunteering. Make A Difference Day was created by USA WEEKEND Magazine and is recognized as a national day of service. Make A Difference Day takes place the fourth Saturday of every October, so this year it will be Saturday, October 24th. For this year’s Make A Difference Day interested students and student organizations will be working on various community service projects throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula.

In addition, to Make A Difference Day, Michigan Tech Student Activities Office coordinates other community service activities. Service Saturdays, 60 Minutes of Service, Semester Collections and Alternative Spring Break are great ways for students to get involved with community service. Michigan Tech also has several student organizations whose sole purpose is organizing service projects in the local community. Students may also choose to organize their own service projects by dog walking or cat cuddling at the Copper Country Humane Society, chopping wood with Little-Brothers Friends of the Elderly, or being a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Here at Michigan Tech and the surrounding area the options really are limitless when it comes to volunteering and community service.
