Several feet of snow blanket the ground, a chill wind blows through the rattled trees, and the occasional blizzard whips through the streets. That’s right folks, it’s still winter in Houghton. However, like clouds, the one that seems to eternally stifle the Houghton area has a silver lining—Spring Break is less than two weeks away! Although the weather clearly didn’t get the memo, Michigan Tech students certainly have. We’ve long awaited this break over the couple of months—sometimes it feels like years—since Winter Break, and students have an air of silent anticipation about them.
In addition to the typical Spring Break trips to places like Cancun and Miami for a relaxing week, Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) plans a number of trips that emphasize adventure and getting outdoors. These trips are called Alternative Spring Break, and they are a great way for students to get out and explore places that they’ve never been before. They truly are a once in a lifetime experience!
This year’s trips have been planned and are ready for students to register. There are trips that suit any adventurer’s interests, whether students are looking for a trip into the wild west for a break filled with winter fun with skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding in Utah, a journey to the south for a week of climbing, paddling, hiking, and a wild animal safari in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas, or a paddling excursion on both the Buffalo National River and the Mulberry River in Arkansas. All of these trips take place from March 9–16, over the official Spring Break period.
The trips are led by OAP student staff who have extensive training, including Wilderness First Responder Certification and previous trip leader experience. These students have spent countless hours researching and planning these trips to ensure that they are a fun, safe, and even educational experience for their peers. Again, these trips offer a great way for students to trade in the cold and snowy Houghton weather for a trip to a unique and exciting destination at a reasonable cost.
