As some of you may recall, one of my jobs on campus is working as a teaching assistant for a first year course called Creating Your Success. Last week, as a class, we decided to take a trip to the Career Services Center here on campus! This was my first time being to this location in the new facility, which is beautiful! While there, I was able to learn so much about what they offer and about the upcoming career fair. So, I thought it would be nice to share some of this with you so you can help further your student’s career.
Michigan Tech Career Services’ goal is to provide development and placement assistance to undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni. This location is an awesome resource for students! If your student is looking to get prepared for a job, co-op, or internship, this is the place to go. At Career Services, students may do mock interview, learn how to write their resume, gather information about companies looking to hire students, and develop a career plan. Make sure to tell your student to stop in and visit them, Room 220 in the Administration Building.
Fall Career Fair 2011
It is that time again for the Career Fair to take place! This is one of the most exciting times for many students on campus. The Career Fair this fall will be on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in the Student Development Complex. Currently, there are 233 companies signed up. To view information about the companies currently registered for the Fall Career Fair, check out this Registered Employers link.
Last Thursday, September 15, Career Services offered an event called ‘Resume Blitz.’ This was located in the Memorial Union Building from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a great event for students who are in the process of polishing their resumes to attend. Bring in your resume and the staff will give it a quick review for you! This week, September 19-23, Career Services will be hosting ‘Interview Skills Week.’ From 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. your student can stop by the Administration Building room 220 and practice interviewing and get vital feedback to strengthen their interview skills. Contact Career Services to schedule an appointment.
While Interview Skills Week is going on, your student can also visit an information session, ‘Why do a Co-op or Internship?’ This session is designed to help your student learn all the benefits of a co-op or internship, how to get one, and hear from students about their experience. This will be on Wednesday, September 21 in EERC Room 103 at 6:00 p.m.
Michigan Tech Career Services hosts lots of great events throughout the year to help students with career development and job placement. Events range from the Resume Blitz and the Interview Skills Week mentioned above, to a Dining Etiquette Dinner; Networking Skills session; and Negotiating Job Offers meeting. A complete list of events offered by Career Services can be found on the Career Services Online Calendar.
