The Michigan Tech Standathon is an annual 12 hour standing marathon designed to raise money for Bay Cliff Health Camp.  Bay Cliff is a year-round not-for-profit therapy and wellness center for children and adults with disabilities.  Bay Cliff offers several camps that focus on increasing independence and recreational activities for those with disabilities.  This year’s Standathon will take place Friday, March 26 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the Student Development Complex.

Activities

Last year, Standathon was held in the Memorial Union Building and was a huge success.  This year, Standathon was moved to the Student Development Complex where there would be further options for activities like skating and broomball.  This year there will be over thirty fun activities for students to participate in.  With some of the bizarre activities and great prizes that will be available to this year’s participants there’s no way students won’t want to stay on their feet! To give you an idea of just some of the activities that will be offered:  there will be live band performances in the Student Development Complex by Banana Republic and the Speedbumps as well as a comedy performance in the Memorial Union Building.  The Student Development Complex pool will be open for swimming, water polo, and a Kayak Clinic hosted by the Outdoor Adventure Program.  The Student Development Center ice arena will be open along with the climbing wall, pistol range, and the racquetball and walleyball courts.

Some of the other crazy and fun activities include sumo wrestling, blacklight mini golf, food eating contests, laser tag, video game competitions, and life-sized board games.  In addition to all the fun activities there will also be several prizes and giveaways throughout the night.  There will be several smaller prizes raffled off by the hour.  This year’s grand prize is an iPod Touch!  Lastly, to top it off, there will be great food and snacks at Standathon. Students who stand all night will get to sit down at 6 a.m. to a complimentary pancake breakfast.

Entrance to Standathon is $10 at the door or $20 worth of pledges.  $20 puts students in the running for the grand prize, iPod Touch.  The first 50 people at the door and anyone that receives more than $20 in pledges or pays $15 at the door will get a free t-shirt, while supplies last.

Standathon Student Organization

Standathon is a Michigan Tech student organization that was established to provide students with the opportunity to participate in a once a year large scale community service event.  The student members of the Standathon organization spend the year planning for this 12 hour event.  The students coordinate everything from the t-shirt designs, to advertisement, to donations of prizes and food.  Standathon is certainly an impressive student run event!

Standathon 2010 is bound to be a great time and I strongly encourage your student to go.  Standathon is the perfect event for students to meet new people while volunteering and having an awesome time!  As a reminder the entrance fee is $10 at the door or $20 in pledges and students can leave at any point throughout the evening.
